Women’s History Month

Interview with Shayna
Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
S: It is a day to celebrate all accomplishments of all women around the world. It gives us a chance to stop and reflect on the long history of women’s rights and how far we have come throughout the years.
Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman?
S: Yes. At a previous job I was held back from learning new equipment/machinery due to being a woman.
What is the most important piece of advice you have been given?
SN: The most important piece of *work* advice I was given was that I cannot control people’s reactions. I am in control of my own actions, my own integrity, and my own work ethic.
How can we encourage more women to pursue leadership roles in their career?
S: The biggest encouragement is support!
What is the most important message you would like to send to young women thinking about their careers?
S: Take pride in the work that you do and take the initiative to keep improving your skills. Don’t ever stop looking for ways to better yourself, whether that happens to be inside the workplace or out, because if you stop improving you will stop progressing. Don’t forget that confidence is key, you need to believe in yourself and be your own biggest fan.
Is there anyone who inspires you in your career?
S: As a woman, My mother in law (MIL) is a huge inspiration. Also my family, I want to keep improving myself for my kids.
If you could have dinner with an inspirational woman, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
S: A few! Mia Hamm because she was my icon when I was young. I had a lengthy soccer career in my young life thanks to her. Chiaki Mukai because I was always fascinated by space and the constellations when I was much younger, and she was the first Japanese woman in space. Ilona Maher because she’s an Olympic athlete and looks like a lot of fun to hang out with.
