Women’s History Month

Interview with Drew
Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
D: I believe it’s important to celebrate International Women’s Day because International Women’s Day raises awareness on how women are looked down upon in many different situations.
Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman?
D: I have not faced any barriers in my career due to being a woman. However, I believe women are facing barriers everyday within their careers and even outside of them. Women are very underestimated in a lot of what they do.
What is the most important piece of advice you have been given?
D: The most important piece of advice that I have been given is that change takes time, always be patient, things don’t happen overnight, and consistency will teach you discipline and patience.
How can we encourage more women to pursue leadership roles in their career?
D: We can encourage women to pursue leadership roles in their careers by telling them to always believe in themselves and by being supportive. Women are just as strong of leaders as men, and they have what it takes to lead.
What is the most important message you would like to send to young women thinking about their careers?
D: The most important message I would like to send to young women thinking about their careers is don’t let anyone hold you back whether that’s family, friends, significant others, etc. It’s good to get out of your comfort zone and you will truly never know unless you try. It is important to experience as much as you can in your lifetime and it’s better to tell yourself “I tried and now, I know that this career is not for me.” Instead of, “I wonder what could have been if I took that step.” You have way more potential than you think and don’t let someone, even your family, hold you back. People are always going to have their opinions of you. Do not let people discourage you, tell you that you are less, and that you are not capable of achieving your goals and dreams. You are!
Is there anyone who inspires you in your career?
D: My mother inspires me in my career. She has always been a positive role model in my life. My mom was a young single mother around 26-28 years old trying to establish a career for herself. I try to put myself in her shoes considering I am currently 28 years old, and I don’t know if/ how I would do it especially with a young child. Now, she is a successful woman coming close to retirement from 25 years in law enforcement.
If you could have dinner with an inspirational woman, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
D: If I could have dinner with an inspirational woman, it would be Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo the president of Mexico. It would be very inspiring and interesting to hear about her aspects of life and hear her life story about how she got to where she is as the President of Mexico.
