Celebrating Black History Month

Q&A with Jessica
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black History Month is the chance to celebrate the culture. It is a time to reflect on the struggles, the wins, the progress that has been made, and the changes that still need to come. It is also an opportunity to educate yourself and others about the culture.
How do you celebrate Black History Heritage Month?
My children and I like to attend events, watch specials, movies, and shows that celebrate and educate about Black culture. I think it is also important to have conversations with each other about Black History Heritage. My Grandpa was 90 years old when he passed away almost two years ago. He was born and grew up on the East Coast, served in the military for over 20 years, went to war, and experienced a lot in his days as an African American male. One of my favorite things to do when he was still with us was to have conversations about his experiences in life.
How can others celebrate Black History Heritage Month?
I believe ignorance is not bliss, and the most important way to celebrate would be to educate yourself. There are a ton of specials on TV and events that take place all over the Bay Area. Eventbrite is a great resource when searching for events available to attend and learn about the culture.
Who are the role models or mentors that have influenced you or helped guide you?
I have had a handful of role models in my life, but one that is near and dear to my heart is my Aunt Lori. Since I can remember, she has been the rock in my family. Despite life’s ups and downs, she always keeps a positive outlook, lends a helping hand, keeps her faith strong, and her beautiful spirit touches everyone she encounters. I truly admire her strength, positivity, and ability to bring calm to the storm with her presence.
Which Black History figure inspires you and why?
There are quite a few individuals who are inspiring and play a significant role in Black History, but I would have to say Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the top inspirations. His movement helped pave the way for change in African American culture and created a foundation for others to follow in his footsteps to continue the fight for positive changes to be made.
