Meet Richa
Where were you born? What is your heritage?
I was born in New Delhi, India. Grandparents from both sides of my family migrated from what is now Pakistan during the India-Pakistan partition and migration in 1947 that transpired as the British monarchy left the region. Both of my parents were less than seven years old at the time and got transplanted close to New Delhi, India because that’s where my grandparents ended up settling post-partition.
Are you celebrating Global Diversity Month?
Living in this melting pot of the Bay Area, I feel every day and month is an occasion to appreciate and celebrate the diversity this area offers – from people to cuisines to religiously and culturally observed “holidays.”
What is a misconception about Indian people? And how would you respond to that?
That we all speak one “Indian” language, it is not only possible but most likely probable that one Indian in the Bay Area may not understand a single word of the “first language” of another Indian in the Bay Area. Because the first language we are taught is often the regional one.
