Q: What does Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month mean to you?
A: To me, AAPI month is a time to recognize and appreciate the cultures, traditions, sacrifices, and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. It is also a reminder of the hard work and values passed down through generations. As someone who is Filipino and Chinese, it gives me an opportunity to reflect on my family’s journey and the importance of staying connected to my heritage.
Q: How do you celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month? How can others celebrate it?
A: My family does not specifically celebrate AAPI month, but we celebrate and carry out our culture through family traditions, food, gathering throughout the year, especially during Lunar New Year. I think others can celebrate AAPI month by learning about different cultures, supporting Asian-owned businesses, attending community events, and simply taking the time to listen to and appreciate people’s stories and experiences.
Q: How has your heritage shaped the person you are today? How has it influenced your career?
A: My upbringing taught me responsibility, dedication, and the importance of doing my best in everything I do. Watching my parents work hard and make sacrifices motivated me to develop a strong work ethic and sense of accountability, which has influenced how I approach my career and support my team.
Who are the role models or mentors that have influenced you or helped guide you?
My biggest role model is my mom. She made many sacrifices for our family and always put us first. Her strength, hard work, and dedication to family have had a major impact on the person I am today.
Q: Does your family have any traditions that are especially important to you?
A: One important tradition we continue today is gathering with family to celebrate Lunar New Year. We gather 12 or 13 lucky fruits to symbolize luck, prosperity, and abundance for the new year. We also celebrate with firecrackers to help ward off negative spirits and welcome good fortune, as well as giving red envelopes to family members as a symbol of blessings and good luck. Most importantly, spending time together as a family during these celebrations is something that remains very meaningful to me.
Q: Which Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month figure inspires you and why?
A: Alysa Liu inspires me because of her positive attitude, resilience, and strong work ethic. Even under pressure at a young age, she continued to work hard and stay true to herself. I admire how she represents perseverance while encouraging others to stay positive and enjoy the journey rather than focusing only on success.
Q: What are your favorite traditional dishes? Do you have recipes for any of them to share?
A: During family gatherings, my mom usually makes a Chinese Soup. One of our favorite soups is called Bean Curd & Shiitake Pork Ribs Soup. It’s a simple soup that’s delicious and comforting.
I also love chicken adobo, which usually consists of chicken, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, bay leaves, peppercorn, and onions. Another favorite is pinakbet, a flavorful Filipino vegetable dish.
