Q: How has your heritage shaped the person you are today? How has it influenced your career?
A: My heritage has played a huge role in shaping my career and the person I am today. Since I was a child, my parents always told me stories of our Gurus and how they would serve their communities. I learned from these lessons that you should always try to help those in your community and help those who need it. There is a principle in Sikhi called “Seva” or selfless service. This value shaped my mindset by encouraging me to contribute to my community and help others whenever I can. It has also influenced how I work professionally. I try to be someone who my team can rely on and is dependable.
Another principle I immensely value is “Kirat Karo”, which roughly translates to earning a living through hard work. It’s because of this that I take so much pride in my work and why I truly believe my work reflects who I am. I try to act with integrity and try to do my best even when I face the most arduous of challenges. Sikhi teaches resilience and perseverance and learning about the sacrifices the Sikh Gurus made inspired me to stand firm by my beliefs and face challenges with my head held high.
Q: Who are the role models or mentors that have influenced you or helped guide you?
A: This question is very important to me for many reasons because I consider my mother to be my biggest role model. My father passed away when I was 13 years old, and watching my mother adapt to that situation taught me an important lesson. Attitude is the forerunner of circumstances. Seeing her face the challenges of being a single parent with grace and humility taught me that, no matter what the situation, you always have a choice and an opportunity to move forward.
